— The Hilldale Hornets’ early pitching struggle lead to easy pickings for the Sallisaw Black Diamonds, who ended the game with a 13-3 run rule win at Hilldale High School on Tuesday.

The Hornets (0-2) found themselves down 7-2 early after giving up seven walks in two innings. The Black Diamonds scored only one run in the first and six in the second that started with two consecutive successful bunts that loaded the bases. Cameron Haughey walked the next batter to start the scoring for Sallisaw before exiting the game.

Blake Cooper took over mound duties but Sallisaw continued with a sacrifice fly, a walk, and a hit batter brought in two more runs. But it was a three-run double from Jacob Spyers that busted the score open to 7-2. Miscommunication in the outfield led to two more runs, making it 9-2 after 3 1/2 innings.

Hilldale pitching walked 10 runners and hit three batters which put eight of Sallisaws runs on base.

“We just didn’t throw strikes. But we are a young team. Not making any excuses for us. We are young,” said Hilldale coach Darren Riddle. “We didn’t help out defensively.

“With the amount of walks we had, its hard to win a game with that, its really hard.”

Hilldale’s three runs came all in different innings. In the first Matthew Bargsten got on base with a single and was drove in by Bailey Puckett who doubled to the wall. Dawson Hogner’s double in the second drove home Cody Walker for the Hornets’ second run.

Derek Altman’s double to right field was paid off when Gunner Drake single scored him on the next play.

Hilldale hosts Stilwell on Thursday.
