Tigers move on with win at Victory Christian

TULSA – The combined efforts of senior Zach Cobler and sophomore Levi Ford is what Fort Gibson needed.

Each scored one goal and assisted on the other to lift the Tigers (11-4) in a 2-0 road win against Victory Christian Tuesday night in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.

The Tigers had the ball on the Victory end of the field most of the time of the game. It just took awhile to score.

After getting a pass from Ford, Cobler scored with 6:26 remaining in the game as he booted the ball above VC goalkeeper Ben Peterson, right into the high center of the net below the crossbar. That made the score 1-0.

Ford caught the ball just a yard away after taking a pass from Cobler, and knocked it on with under 2:31 left.

“We played them in the Wagoner tournament and beat them 4-0,” Fort Gibson coach Todd Friend said. “I think we came in overconfident thinking we’re going to beat them quick. Victory is much improved since we last saw them.”

It wasn’t the first time Fort Gibson encountered the Conquerors in the playoffs. They met on the same field in the first round last year with Tigers winning 3-0.

“I give credit to Victory and their coaches,” Friend said. “I knew if we played them hard, we could wear them down. We knew our conditioning could help us in the long run.”

In previous scoring attempts, Peterson would make saves in time against the Fort Gibson offense.

With 21:59 left in the half, Cobler kicked the ball toward the net, but Peterson was able catch it a few yards directly in front for the save.

Nearly two minutes later, freshman Cru Whitlow kicked toward the goal, but the ball traveled too high over the crossbar.

With 13:23 left in the half, the Tigers were awarded a free kick. Junior Johan Chavez kicked the ball over a wall of Victory defenders, but Peterson was able catch it in the same spot.

Another high shot by Cobler came within the first two minutes of the second half, then he kicked it outside to the right a minute later.

Ford made a pair off of corner kicks later in the game.

Thomas Holten made a save at 50:31 into the game for Fort Gibson after the Conquerors’ Chase Holmes tried to score after streamlining with the ball down the nearside of the field, after taking a pass from teammate David Glaub.
