Muskogee hangs tough with top-ranked Owasso

It was a matter of too much offense by Owasso and not enough for Muskogee as the visiting Rams took a 6-1 victory at Roughers Park on Monday.

Owasso, 25-0 on the season, 8-0 in District 6A-3 and No. 1 in the Class 6A poll,  struck first in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Andrew Rosa that drove in Jonah Bride.

The Roughers (9-16, 2-8) answered in the home half of the first on a single by Harris Jones, plating Garrett Brown.

The two teams traded outs until the fourth inning, when the Rams plated four runs, the first three coming on a home run by Trae Bobo.

“Aside from the one mistake to Bobo, I thought Ethan (Barton) did a good job,” said MHS coach Jeremy Griffin. “The guy (Bobo) had twelve bombs coming in to tonight, the guy can hit. We got behind 3-0, and I’ll take credit, we should have walked him and we didn’t. Other than that I thought Ethan did a good job of keeping us in the game.”

Muskogee did not get too many chances on Owasso starter Peyton Laing.  Laing tossed the complete game giving up two hits but also had two hit batsmen and two walks while recording  eight strikeouts.

The Roughers only other real threat came in the sixth inning. Brown again reached base by getting hit but was caught attempting to steal second.  Tony Horn induced a one-out walk and stole second but was stranded on a flyout by Jones and a strikeout by Tyler Bowden.

Barton also tossed a complete game for Muskogee giving up six runs on eight hits.

“That’s the best I’ve thrown all year, but a team like that , they can hit,” Barton said. “ I had all my stuff today but they just hit everything. That’s what good teams do.”

These two teams will face off again at 7 p.m. today in Owasso.
