Tahlequah edges MHS in barnburner

The Muskogee Lady Roughers let a 10-3 lead slip away as the Tahlequah Lady Tigers scored 11 runs in two innings to escape with a 17-16 win in a 6A top 5 matchup at Muskogee High School on Tuesday.

The Lady Tigers, 29-4 and No. 2 in Class 6A, trailed by seven in the fourth when Lainy Wallace, Morgan Tarrance and Erin Dillard started the inning off with singles allowing Randee O’Donnell to drive in two with a double. The top of the order continued with hits until they found themselves trailing 10-7.

"Slowpitch is a crazy game, so a 10-3 lead isn’t much," said O’Donnell. "It did not take much for us to be within three."

The Lady Tigers continued their rally as they loaded the bases with no outs to start the fifth inning.

Tahlequah found success from Bub Peters who drove in two runs on a shot to the wall. Tahlequah scored seven runs in the fifth to put themselves up 14-10.

"Tahlequah is one of the best teams in the state,” said Muskogee coach Keith Coleman. ”They hit really well, and slowpitch is the kind of game you can be up 10 and down 10 in a matter of two innings.”

Dee Emarthle worked to get her squad back into the game with a three-run home run in the fifth inning which made the score. But Tahlequah responded in the next inning as Morgan Tarrance had a two-run home run to extend their lead to 16-13.

"We battled through adversity when we could have laid down,” said Tahlequah coach Matt Cloud. “Honestly we could have been run-ruled. But my girls never gave up.”.

Tahlequah shut the Lady Roughers out in the sixth inning.

Emarthle was big offensively for the Lady Roughers, 21-9 and No. 5 6A, as she finished the day 5-for-5 at the plate with six RBIs and a home run. Emarthle also scored Bailee Hendrickson on a double in the bottom of the seventh making it a 17-14 game which started a surge that would fall short of a final inning comeback.

"Muskogee is a great team though,” Cloud said. “Honestly I could really see them making a run at the state finals and I would really like to see it be against us.”

Muskogee 9, Heavener 4 — Shaylee Rowland and Emarthle helped the Lady Roughers with some keys hits to come a way with a win over the Heavener Lady Wolves on Tuesday at Muskogee High School. The Lady Roughers put the game away with a three-run sixth inning.

Tahlequah 13, Heavener 2 — With strong hitting present, the Lady Tigers had no problems putting away the Lady Wolves with a 13-2 run-rule victory. A two-run home run from Peters ended the contest.
