Porter coach departure among area changes

Jason Jack is leaving Porter boys basketball after two seasons to become the new head boys coach at Northwest Classen in Oklahoma City. Jack was hired Monday night and informed the Porter administration of his departure Tuesday.

Jack went 43-14 in the past two seasons at Porter after coaching at Tulsa Edison.

“Typically in the past they’ve been competive but thery were down this past year because they were freshman and sophomore loaded,” Jack said. “I think it’s going to rebound and I’m looking forward to it. It’s certainly in a tough conference with the other Oklahoma City schools.”

Jack said he’s also looking forward to being close to his former Pirates standout, Jacob Richardson, the three-time Phoenix boys MVP.

“Him being at UCO next year, it’ll make it easier to keep tabs on him,” he said.

Among other coaching developments:

• Chad Hendricks returns to the area at Checotah. The former defensive coordinator at Skiatook the past seven seasons was previous to that head coach at Tahlequah High and was hired as an assistant at Muskogee under Ron Lancaster.

“Everything has really fallen into place here in terms of it being a fit,” Hendricks said.

One of those fits was the right teaching slot for Jeramy Branchcomb. The former Hilldale and Northeastern State player who has been on the staff at Pryor High School will serve as Hendricks’ offensive coordinator.

Lynn Cutshaw, my former offensive coordinator at Tahlequah, grew up and went to school here and advised me that it might be open and encouraged me to go for it,” he said. “It’s also a lot closer to family in Tahlequah which makes my wife happy.

Breaking into a chuckle, he added, “That’s always one of the most important things in a job is keeping the wife happy.”

He follows Brandon Turley, who left for his alma mater at Henryetta a couple months ago.

“Brandon left it in good shape and I’ve already told some people this is no rebuilding job but something to keep going and build on,” he said.
