Midway’s season ends in rematch with Lomega

KINGSTON – The Midway Lady Chargers had the dubious task of trying to keep defending state champion Lomega from returning to the state tournament.

Try as it might, Midway fell to the Lady Raiders 57-29 in the Class B area finals in Kingston on Saturday.

The Lady Chargers (23-5) were looking to avenge a 71-37 loss to Lomega in last week’s regional championship game. However, the Lady Raiders proved they were ready by opening up a 30-10 halftime advantage.

“They are the defending state champs and looked like it,” said Midway coach Spencer Phipps. “We made a game of it in the third quarter but they hit a couple of 3s and we never got it back to 10.”

The two shots Phipps was referring to came after Midway had  opened up the third quarter with a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 30-20. After Lomega pushed its lead to 36-20 and were never threatened again.

“The lead was 15 for most of the fourth quarter,” Phipps said. “My girls played hard and I’m very proud of them. The two teams from our area (Lomega and Red Oak) will probably meet in the championship game.”

Midway did not have a player reach the double-figure mark as Zadie McElhaney and Courteni Conley led the Lady Chargers with seven points each.
