Rougher spikers end up second

Muskogee volleyball coach John Hammer would call the Lady Roughers’ appearance in the Westmoore Tournament a success.

But he’d footnote it with this assessment — his team’s showing in the championship game against Westmoore was a disappointment.

The Lady Roughers (5-1) overcame a 2-0 deficit before falling to the Lady Jaguars for their first loss of the season in five sets by scores of 17-25, 18-25, 27-25, 25-22,  and 8-15.

According to Hammer, the main downfall was errors.

“We had 34 hitting errors for the entire match,” Hammer said. “You shouldn’t have 34 for the season. We had 10 serving errors and four blocking errors. You add all that up and that’s 48 points we just handed to them and we lost by a total of 23. So I couldn’t be more disappointed.”

Sophomore Claire Farmer, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, led the Lady Roughers with 13 kills but had 14 attack errors. Setter Jensen Martin also earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.

The Lady Roughers (5-1) made it to the final match by downing Putnam City in four sets in the semifinals 25-23, 24-26, 25-23 and 25-22. Farmer led the way with 17 kills while Alexis Rosson registered 14 kills, Leigh Westbrook had eight kills and Karla Jones had seven kills.

“I don’t want to take away from the weekend; it was a great success,” Hammer said. “We played hard and we played well. We’ve got to forget about the championship match and come back strong and get ready for Jenks on Tuesday.”
