Knights fall to Cookson Hills in opener

Experience is nice to have but it will only take you so far. Just ask the Boulevard Christian Knights.

Even though half the lineup was made up of four-year senior starters, it just wasn’t enough as the Knights fell to their arch rivals, the Cookson Hills Christian-Cross Christian Academy Crusaders 48-12 Friday night at the Love-Hatbox Sports Complex.

Senior quarterback Sean Davis pretty summed up the feelings of the Knights.

“The loss  (stunk) but we all played our hearts out,” said Davis. “We got too tired at the end not having any subs, but overall I’m proud of our effort. I just know we have lot of work to do in our line and I have a lot of improving to do at quarterback.”

The game started on a high note for the Knights as they recovered a Crusader fumble on the opening kickoff. They took it 35 yards in two plays with Davis hitting Tanner Wade with a 30-yard scoring strike less than two minutes into the game. The two-point conversion failed and the Knights led 6-0.

Boulevard got another break with a Cookson Hills turnover at their own 35. They moved it inside the Crusader 40-yard line before Davis threw an interception, the first of three turnovers on the night by the Knights.

From that point forward, it was the Luke Wiese show for the Crusaders. The Cookson Hills quarterback, who looked more like a lumbering linebacker, took his team 66 yards in six plays, going the final two yards himself to tie the game at 6-6 as the conversion attempt failed.

Wiese scored two more touchdowns in the first half on runs of three and 10 yards and completed a 32-yard pass as time expired in the first half to give the Crusaders a comfortable 26-6 lead in the locker room. For the game, Weise ran for four touchdowns and passed for one and accounted for 361 yards of offense.

-“We just got too predictable with our plays and they were able to shut us down after that first touchdown,” said a disappointed Boulevard head coach Jerry Perdue. “They were able to penetrate our line and keep us from getting any momentum, particularly in the second half where we started wearing down.”

-Boulevard’s only other score came late in the third quarter. After a Cookson Hills touchdown, the Knights started a drive at their own 43-yard line and went 57 yards in 10 plays with Davis connecting with Wade again on a 20-yard pass. With the two-point try failing, it was a 32-12 Cookson Hills lead. The Crusaders put it in the end zone twice more in the fourth for the final margin.

Cookson Hills coach Curtis Waltman was fairly pleased with his team’s victory.

“We just couldn’t get into a rhythm early in the game, we committed a couple of turnovers early and it took us a while to get going,” said Waltman. “Our biggest downside is that when they get up on someone, they tend to let up and relax and that’s just something we just have to keep preaching to them.”

For Boulevard, Davis led the way on offense, going 9-of-14 for 142 yards.

Boulevard is host to Claremore Christian on Sept. 6.
