Prep volleyball roundup: Tahlequah falls in Coweta finals

Edison defeated 5A No. 12 Tahlequah in the finals of the Coweta Tournament 2-0 (25-22, 25-19) after defeating Muskogee 2-0 in the semifinals (25-20, 25-22).

Tahlequah moved to 18-5 overall. The Lady Tigers also beat East Central 2-0 (25-23, 25-12), Claremore 2-0 (26-24, 25-15) and Edison 2-0 (25-17, 25-12) in games earlier in the day.

Also in the tourney, 4A No. 4 Sequoyah lost its perfect record going 2-3 in pool play on Friday but bounced back to win four of five matches and the consolation title here Saturday.

Sequoyah beat Sand Springs 2-1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-20) to claim that title. Earlier in the day, they beat Claremore 2-0 (25-20, 25-11), Claremore 2-1 (25-11, 24-25, 25-22) and helped make Muskogee’s day a long one winning 2-1 (19-25, 25-20, 25-22), but more on that momentarily. Sequoyah’s loss was a 2-1 game to Edison (10-25, 25-22, 7-25), which won the tournament.

Sand Springs ended Sequoyah’s unbeaten run at 19-0 on Friday. The Lady Indians are now 24-4.

Muskogee lost to Coweta, Tahlequah and Sequoyah in games played Saturday.

“Beating a 6A team was big for us,” Sequoyah coach Jay Herrin said, his team now 24-4.

After attempting to double-block Muskogee’s Claire Farmer, Herrin made a switch and went with 6-1 middle blocker Jhonette Cookson, a Tahlequah transfer, which he said was key after spotting MHS a 1-0 lead.

“Not that she dominated her by any means but she sparked us by getting some blocks and tips and making her hit it around the block,” Herrin said.

Sequoyah’s Brittanie Wacoche was all-tournament. Two key Lady Indians, Audrey Ballou and Bailee Herrin, didn’t play Friday but battled through injuries seeing action on Saturday.

Muskogee also lost to Coweta 2-0 (25-15, 25-21). Muskogee slipped to 10-9 on the year.

Other than Wacoche, no other area all-tourney players were reported as of press time.
