Warner opened its 2012-13 prep basketball season on Monday by hosting Webbers Falls and walked away with a split in the doubleheader with the Eagles pulling out a 53-47 decision while the Webbers Falls girls outlasted the Lady Eagles 49-45 in overtime.
The Warner boys had three players finish the game in double figures with Grey Denton leading the way with 19 points. Kyle Taylor finished with 14 points and KT Parker adding 13 points. Jordan Sharp led the Warriors with a game-high 20 points.
“I just got the football kids into the gym last week,” said Warner coach Jimmy Bliss. “We had three practices and two scrimmages as a unit and it looked like it. But we hung in there and pulled it out.”
The girls game saw the Lady Eagles jump out to an 8-0 lead but could not maintain the advantage. The Lady Warriors were led by Brandie Chappell with a 18 points including a 9-of-9 from the free-throw line, while Warner saw Ravin Girty finish with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds.
“”We missed too many free throws,” said Warner girls coach Justin Kana. “That and the 20 turnovers we had and that was the game.”
Both schools return to action on Thursday with Webbers Falls traveling to Porter while Warner hosts Hulbert.
