Roughers swept by Cascia Hall

Muskogee came up short on the scoreboard and its soccer lineup Tuesday at Indian Bowl.

The Cascia Hall Commandos scored twice in  a span of two minutes and three seconds en route to a 4-2 non-district win at chilly Indian Bowl on Tuesday, against a Roughers team that was missing three starters because they showed up nine minutes later than they were supposed to.

“We’re trying to change the face of the program,” MHS coach Shawn Riley said. “We’re trying to hold our kids to a standard. The Muskogee soccer program didn’t represent itself very well last year.”

Riley declined to give the players’ names, but he said they were three starters.

Osvaldo Olmos and Max Lopez scored the goals at 7:26 and 5:23, respectively. The Roughers had an apparent goal on Shay Hoog’s header disallowed with 20:38 left in the game.

“The referee called it offsides,” Riley said. “You have to have one defensive player between you and the goalkeeper when the ball is delivered.”

The Roughers scored twice in the first half on goals by junior midfielder Troy Stoutermire at 29:49 and by junior forward David Espinoza with 15:43 remaining.

Muskogee dropped to 1-1 after opening its season last week with a shootout win against Catoosa.

Curt Denton, in his second stint as the Lady Roughers’ coach, watched his team (0-1) barrage the Lady Commandos with three shots on goal in the last four minutes of the game, but came up empty. MHS tried a penalty kick with 5.1 seconds left, but didn’t score.

“The girls have their heads down a little bit but I’m real happy with the outcome against a really good team,” said Denton, who last coached MHS in 2005. “We’re still kind of young and new to everything.”

Muskogee’s lone goal came with 26:45 left in the game on Morgan Springborn’s shot sailing over the goalkeeper’s head.

Carlie Cook scored both of Cascia Hall’s goals.

The Muskogee girls play at Keys on Friday, while both teams are at Coweta on Monday. The Roughers and Lady Roughers are back at Indian Bowl next Thursday against Bishop Kelley.
