Success Expo offers personal, business advice to 1,400 participants
‘Seek to understand more than being understood’

By Cathy Spaulding
Phoenix Staff Writer

A complementary Success Expo tote bag wasn’t enough for child care consultant Cheri Clark.

As she visited booths at the Expo, held Tuesday at Arrowhead Mall, Clark pulled a red wagon loaded with information, pens and goodies she got from each booth. She got a plastic cowboy hat from the city of Muskogee booth, a phone book, a pill box from a health care booth, plus a whole bag full of pens and candy.

“And I won this from Arvest Bank,” she said, showing off a pocket travel kit featuring a tire gauge, pen and flashlight. I’ve been to these Expos four times. It’s neat. I like some of the workshops, such as Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.”

Clark was one of more than 1,400 business people, employees, managers and others who visited the booths and seminars at the Greater Muskogee Area Chamber of Commerce Success Expo, “It’s a Jungle Out There.” The Expo featured a variety of seminars designed to help people in their jobs and personal lives.

“This was the perfect event for the chamber to promote businesses and the business environment,” said chamber president and Chief Executive Officer Sue Harris. “I’m getting great communications from our vendors, and the feedback from our seminars has been amazing.”

In one seminar, Northeastern State University information systems instructor Kenneth Jones Jr. said the most important part of effective business communication is listening.

“Listening is the most-used business skill,” he said. “Forty percent of our time is spent listening and 35 percent is talking. Our filters (formed by prejudices and experiences) can lead to listening problems. Make sure you know what the customer is talking about.”

Jones said effective business communicators make sure they are on the same wavelength as their clients.

“Seek to understand more than being understood,” he said.

Jones concluded his talk with five steps for effective communication:

• Love people.

• Work hard.

• Learn tirelessly.

• Create fearlessly.
