Published July 18, 2008 10:19 pm - Wanted: Volunteers who like to cuddle PAWS needs you to help acclimate animals By Cathy Spaulding Phoenix Staff Writer Editor’s note: One in a series of volunteer opportunities available in Muskogee. This may be the cuddliest volunteer opportunity in town. The Promoting Animal Welfare Society, or PAWS, is looking for volunteers to love the cats and dogs they have up for adoption, said Executive Director Dorothy Farmer. “Loving them keeps them from having issues,” Farmer said. “We don’t get that many animals that are agressive, but the less socialized they are, the more sheltered dogs they become. They get scared, timid mostly. It would be just like a child. If you didn’t nurture them, they get timid.” So, the animal shelter, located on the east side of the Muskogee Turnpike access road between Chandler Road and Gibson Street, is looking for someone to pet the cats, nuzzle the dogs, let the animals get out and run around, she said. “The bigger dogs get plenty of excercise,” Farmer said. The bigger dogs also need a little extra care. Farmer said large black dogs tend to stay at the no-kill shelter longer because so few people want to adopt black dogs. The shelter keeps about 25 to 30 dogs and 15 to 20 cats at a time, Farmer said. “Volunteers can call and pick the time they want to come,” she said. The shelter has three part-time employees and young people tending to the animals as community service work. Farmer herself is a volunteer. “For 17 years, I have always been a volunteer,” she said.
