Published September 06, 2008 12:01 am - Welcome to A Graceful Affair By Travina Coleman Phoenix Features Writer Jennifer Sparks said her church does a lot of different things to outreach in the community. But this time they are doing a little “in-reach.” Grace Episcopal Church is hosting A Graceful Affair, an evening of dinner and dancing for Muskogee residents. “This is the first time we have done something like this,” she said. “The youth groups here have been working hard to raise money for the roof in our parish hall.” This is a casually formal event. “We wanted people to feel comfortable in their clothes,” she said. “If they want to wear their Wrangler jeans and a jacket or rhinestones, they can.” Sparks, youth leader for the junior and senior high youth groups, said the church, while a historic building, is noticing their parish hall aging not so gracefully. “We were trying to think of different things we could do,” she said. “We have a lovely little courtyard and memorial garden, and one of the kids said it would be perfect for a dance.” So Sparks and the youth began organizing and brainstorming, to pull the event together. “We have held a car wash, and a pancake brunch earlier this summer,” she said. “The kids did all the washing and the cooking. This is the next fundraiser.” With those two efforts they raised $600. “We would love to have about 100 people show up for this,” she said. “We have already sold 50 tickets.” Sparks said the kids are working feverishly to get the courtyard set up beautifully. “We have a white light covered canopy,” she said. “We have a DJ who will be playing different genres from the 1940s until now.” And if you have kids or grandchildren, don’t worry about it. They have daycare open for them free.
