Event showcases county fire departments

Assistant City Editor

By Liz McMahan

Joshua Garner pulled down the visor on the firefighter’s helmet and intently twisted the steering wheel of a Porum Volunteer Fire Department truck back and forth as he imagined driving to an imaginary fire.

He lifted the visor and turned to his mom.

This is really something, the grin on the 5-year-old’s face seemed to say.

Garner was one of hundreds of area children climbing on firetrucks, peering into helicopter ambulances and trying their hand at squirting water on a target Saturday at Arrowhead Mall.

It was all part of Muskogee County Firefighters Appreciation Day — a day for the county’s 18 fire departments to show their appreciation for the public’s support.

The event was a huge success, said Speck Plunkett, chief of the Keefeton Volunteer Fire Department.

“It’s been really good,” he said. “We had 200 T-shirts to give away and they were all gone in the first hour.”

So were dozens of smoke detectors for adults and plastic firefighter helmets for children.

When things had slowed down Saturday afternoon, Plunkett and other firefighters talked about improving the event next year. Jesse Wright of Porum talked about building a maze to help children learn about getting out of a building.

A couple of trucks away, Greg Smith of the Summit Volunteer Fire Department, showed off a pumper truck his group recently acquired.

“I would like for the people to see what we’ve done in the last few years,” Smith said. “We have come from nothing. Now we run five trucks, six including our non-emergency vehicle.”

The fire department has 16 volunteers and they have been able to save at least two houses in the last several months, he said.

Summit and the other fire departments all have acquired equipment with a 0.0015 cent sales tax approved by Muskogee County voters in 2005.

Smith hopes the improved equipment in his community will result in lower fire insurance rates for residents.
