Doretha Beasley models one of her favorite hats, “Big Bertha,” at her home in Founder’s Place. The Beasleys go out of their way to decorate their home in a fashionable yet eclectic style that matches their passion for family and church.

Sista survives brain tumor, gets fired up about HATS

Twelve years ago Doretha Beasley awoke at 4 a.m. with a horrendous pain in the crown of her head that lasted two weeks before she saw a physician.

A staff assistant for then U.S. Rep. Tom Coburn at the time, her friends at work insisted it wasn’t a sinus infection and packed her off to her physician.

Two weeks later she was in Denver undergoing surgery for a brain tumor. It was not malignant. She’s still celebrating.

“I love life,” she said, an infectious smile spreading across her face. “When I wake up — I go for the gusto. I just appreciate the little things now.”

She’s convinced we’re all here for a reason “and we’ve got work to do.”

She likes to play along with the work. Playing to her is baking, decorating, shopping and fashion.

She was poor growing up and saw a lot of hard times. But her mother, Irene Collins, always encouraged her and taught her to improvise and be creative.

“I would do art work in hair,” she said, grinning at the remembrance.

Her mother tells her when she was 4 that she would sit in the yard and plait the grass, like she was doing hair in the grass.

“I was so different — and it was OK, whatever I came up with, she (mother) always said nice things.”

She recited Jeremiah 29:11, a verse she came across 20 years ago and never forgot.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declareth the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

She said she walks in that promise.

“He’s going to take care of me no matter what I set out to do — me and my husband,” she said.
