Published May 21, 2008 05:42 pm - THE PEOPLE SPEAK: Progress won’t come of bickering, fighting When I first heard that John Tyler Hammons was running for mayor of Muskogee, I had a considerable number of reservations because of his age and lack of experience. However, 70 percent of the voters voiced their desire for change.
To those of you who did not cast a favorable vote for Hammons, I say this: Whether you agree or disagree with him, he is now our duly elected mayor. We must be willing to support him and help him in every way possible. It is going to be a tough road for him, but probably no tougher than it was for those who preceeded him. In order for this city to grow and flourish, we cannot afford petty bickering amongst ourselves. We cannot afford to serve our own ends before the needs of our fellow citizens. Most importantly, we cannot deny that change — whether for good or ill — is universal. The election of Hammons and Shawn Raper, Jackie Luckey and Bob Luttrull to the City Council is proof that Muskogee desires change. Abraham Lincoln said it best: “Without the assistance and guidance of the Divine Power that aided Washington, I cannot succeed; with that assistance, I cannot fail.” In the end, the power and authority to govern comes from Almighty God. His law and authority is supreme above all others. I know that our new mayor is a Christian. I know that he will look to the wisdom that only God can provide and do exactly what is right. On that point, so may we all, regardless of position or standing. Stephen D. Ezell Muskogee
