Published July 05, 2008 05:37 pm - THE PEOPLE SPEAK: Mail indirectly supports scams targeting elderly Recently, I kept an account of the number of letters received in one month by an elderly member of my family. There was a total of 120 letters and a request for money in all 120 letters totalling $21,967.31. Fifty-two of the letters were from a variety of fundraisers, but most were from sweepstakes scammers.
Sixty-eight of the letters were from psychics that were from eight foreign countries. Some of them sending three letters in one day to pressure and make their plans more effective to get a reply and the money they want for their big promises and schemes. The sweepstakes scammers and psychics are using the U.S. mail services to enter the homes of these elderly people and deceive and rob them of their last dollar, and no one holds them responsible for their crimes. It is clearly stated by the sweepstakes that large sums of money have been won and will be sent for a processing fee and it never comes. Deadlines come an go given by the psychics promising great fortunes and it never happens leaving these dear trusting people depressed and totally bankrupt and having to be placed into nursing homes. I urge you to protect your friends and family from those who can so easily rob them through the U.S. mail. Mary Coffman Wainwright
