Published August 28, 2008 05:10 pm - THE PEOPLE SPEAK: Stimulus resembles drugs; only last so long I heard on a CNN report that President Bush and Congress want to give American workers another stimulus package to help keep the economy going. The $300 per person received from the first stimulus package was supposed to help us buy food, shelter and clothing, yet where the money went was to buy gasoline and make Saudi Arabia richer.
What Washington needs to do is send in the surgeon general and cut off the inflation from our economy. I’m sure maybe another $300 will be enough to buy a few gallons of gas, but that will only take you a few miles. I believe if our government would cut off the hand that feeds the oil rich Arabs, we’d see prices go up at the gas pumps. One other thing I’ll say about the stimulus package — it’s like taking an amphetamine drug, you’re high for a while but after the effect goes away, you’re back on the bottom. I just wonder how long our economy will last. Perhaps, when OPEC has the final word. And is the government trying to give a lethal injection to our senior citizens? They might as well when they do away with Social Security and Medicare. The rich politicians in Washington do not realize or care what kind of nightmare they are bringing to the elderly. Any physician will tell you that when a person gets old they are not able to work like they did as a younger man or woman. The elderly have more medical problems, too, that require more medical attention. I think the children and grandchildren of their aging parents and grandparents should contact these politicians in Congress and the senators and demonstrate their concerns and just what is happening. If we do nothing, our senior citizens will become like the dinosaurs. They’ll be extinct. Diane Basden Quinton
