Published August 28, 2008 05:33 pm - THE PEOPLE SPEAK: Commitment to mayor CO2 pact complicated It seems that you have achieved virtually unanimous support for your goal to sign the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement.
As you, and presumably most of your supporters, know the agreement commits a city to take the following three actions: One: Strive to meet or beat the Kyoto Protocol targets in their own communities, through actions ranging from anti-sprawl land-use policies to urban forest restoration projects to public information campaigns. Two: Urge their state governments, and the federal government, to enact policies and programs to meet or beat the greenhouse gas emission reduction target suggested for the United States, in the Kyoto Protocol (i.e. a 7 percent reduction from 1990 levels by 2012). Three: Urge the U.S. Congress to pass the greenhouse gas reduction legislation, which would establish a national emission trading system (i.e. Cap and Trade). Based on these non-binding requirements, you are committed to contact Sens. Jim Inhofe and Tom Coburn immediately after signing the agreement. I believe that both have expressed some reservations regarding all three of the above named actions. Stephen D’Agostino Muskogee
