Published August 29, 2008 05:06 pm - THE PEOPLE SPEAK: Lowering drinking age not any solution Despite evidence showing that 21 minimum drinking age law saves lives, more than 100 college and university presidents have signed on to an initiative that aims to lower the drinking age. I applaud our Oklahoma colleges and universities as their names do not appear on this initiative.
Since the 21 drinking age law became uniform among states, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that more than 25, 000 lives have been saved. In addition, more than 50 peer-reviewed studies have found that increasing the drinking age significantly lowers alcohol-related fatalities. Research clearly indicates that lowering the drinking age will not lead to decreased alcohol use and abuse rates. Lowering the drinking age can negatively impact youth development, since the brain isn’t fully developed until one’s early 20s. I understand that each college community faces the task of fighting the current binge drinking culture, but the solution is not to lower the drinking age. It is possible that lowering the drinking age will shift the front line of the struggle to our high schools with many of the seniors able to purchase alcohol legally and bring it into easy reach of younger classmates What you can do: Please contact your college or university as an alumni in support of saving lives and supporting the 21 minimum legal drinking age. Encourage the enforcement of the 21 drinking age law. Uphold responsible alcohol policies. Hold those over 21 accountable for providing alcohol to minors.
