Published September 06, 2008 03:15 pm - THE PEOPLE SPEAK: Fundraising provides things schools can’t buy This is in reference to the recent letter titled “School’s in, and the kids are peddling cookie dough.”
The first thing that I would like to know is what planet did you fall off of? Do you have any children? I am 40 years old and a parent of two wonderful children who are active in sports and school-related activities. Fundraising has been around in the school systems since I was a student. For your information, Oklahoma schools conduct fundraisers on the sole part of raising funds to purchase computers, furniture or perhaps even take educational field trips now and then. If Oklahoma schools had better funding, perhaps, we would not have to inconvenience folks like you. I do take offense to the comment that you made about the “two girls that came to your door pimping cookie dough.” On that matter as a mother of athletes, I guess our pocketbooks are not as padded as yours. Therefore, we participated in fundraising in order to pay for those cheerleading outfits, competitions and the softball uniforms and tournaments. I am thankful that the Muskogee area does have such generous individuals that will buy that candle, candy bar and the delicious cookie dough without hesitation. I am employed at a local school district that has wonderful parents, students, volunteers and staff, all to which will donate or give till their hearts bend. Thanks to all who are supportive to their local school districts, students and athletes. Our schools wouldn’t be what they are without your support. Sheila Whittle Oktaha
