THE PEOPLE SPEAK: Can’t make excuses for lost schoolchild

Often I have written letters and had heated debates in defense of educators. This is not one of them.

Today my daughter, 5, was misplaced again by Wagoner Schools for the third time in less than one year, two times in less than a month. I do not care whose fault it is. I do not want to fix the blame.

Fix the problem.

We completed all the paperwork, and after the second lost incident this year, sent large, typed multicolored notes. Madeline is quiet and inward turned. She minds adults because she chooses to. This makes her a perfect target for a perpetrator or an adult who cannot or will not do their job.

The first time she was lost she rode a bus back to the bus barn without the bus driver even knowing she was on the bus. Had our babysitter not been responsible and gone looking for her I guess she would have spent the night there. Our instructions to the school are quite clear and we always follow up with a phone call should anything change.

Oklahoma — you can look this up — is in the highest ranking categories for child abuse and child death. Perpetrators are constantly on the lookout for “lost” children and it takes a blink of an eye for my child or yours to disappear. This does not seem to phase our new principle at Ellington.

To trot out a first-day substitute and say it was her fault is ludicrous. This is an administrative issue. If my daughter had been a load of apples, someone would have checked more than once to make sure the load was correct, but she is just a child. What’s one more, more or less.

By the way, Wagoner does have convicted child molesters living here. You can look that up as well — highest rate of recidivism.
