THE PEOPLE SPEAK: Tea party ideas not as radical as printed

I had hoped it would not be necessary to write after being misquoted by a reporter following the tea party in the Sept. 13 Muskogee Phoenix. After seeing Marjorie Barton’s letter Sept. 19, I feel it is needed.

The quote “The federal government is not responsible for providing health care to the indigent” was not made by my wife or me during our conversation with the reporter.

Good sense dictates that such an absolute, far-reaching statement would not be prudent.

We did speak of the direction of our government and country while the issue of health care was never specifically mentioned.

Our concerns conveyed included high taxation, lack of corporate and individual responsibility and accountability of our elected officials, our government getting too large and wasteful.

We agree that monies pooled together through reasonable taxation and proper fiscal management can afford services and things necessary for Americans living in our great country.

With respect, I do appreciate the points made by Barton.

There is need for changes in our health care system and the speakers at the tea party provided some great information and insight.

The recorded speech from President Ronald Reagan was full of timeless truths and relevant, even today.

Thank you, Jamison Faught, for organizing and to others who helped with the tea party in association with the non-partisan, grass roots movement for all patriotic Americans who want to help protect freedoms and our future.
