Published October 07, 2008 03:58 pm - THE PEOPLE SPEAK: Local paper hides crucial election issues The Phoenix seems to be hiding the fact that evangelicals are supporting John McCain.
A Sept. 29 headline should have been just that. It wasn’t. That fact was hidden on Page 5B, where few people ever go. Churches all across the country are supporting McCain in spite of the possibility of losing their tax-exempt status for open involvement in a political campaign. The reason, pastors say, is that McCain and Sarah Palin “hold more of a biblical world view” than their opposition. In essence, it is more significantly McCain’s stance on abortion and gay marriage that church-goers appreciate. Obama’s former pastor, the infamous Jeremiah Wright, probably caused most God-fearing Americans to take a closer look at his life outside the political light. What they saw was a double-talking ultraliberal that conservative church-goers simply could not support. What’s more interesting is how the Phoenix editors attempted to hide that. If you’re ashamed of your candidate quit supporting him. Oh, by the way, Republicans didn’t cause this financial problem. The Democrats caused the problem a decade ago by requiring banks to make risky loans to unqualified buyers. We are now reaping the rewards. But ask yourself this: How could Obama listen to Sunday sermons for 20 years that called for the damning and overthrowing of America and not be influenced by the rhetoric? Obama chose to listen to it, and I don’t recall either of them saying anyone forced them to keep listening for 20 years. It’s like this. Either Obama agreed with what was preached or he is low functioning mentally. Don’t let politics cause you to become so blinded to reality you vote for someone like that simply because you want to support a Democrat. J.R. Burris Muskogee
