Published October 13, 2008 04:33 pm - THE PEOPLE SPEAK: Campaign tactics get down and dirty It’s frightening to me that John McCain’s campaign is resorting to character assassination of Barack Obama. These are the same Swift-boat-style tactics that George Bush and his architect Karl Rove used against John Kerry in the 2004 campaign and Bush used to defeat McCain in the 2000 campaign.
They accused McCain of fathering their black daughter when actually Cindy McCain adopted her on one of her travels. Since Roe v. Wade we have had three Republicans presidents who proclaimed to be anti-abortion, but once elected they refused to address the issue. They simply used the abortion issue to garner votes from their base. The Wall Street Journal reported that McCain wants to cut $1.3 trillion from Medicare. He voted against the Medicare Part D program that now covers at least some drug costs for 24 million older Americans as reported in the AARP Bulletin. Like Bush, McCain wanted to privatize Social Security. After what’s happening in the stock market, it’s a good thing that didn’t materialize. We need a president who has the temperament, vision and intelligence to lead us in these very dangerous and difficult times. That person is Barack Obama. Mildred Graeser Muskogee
