Published October 13, 2008 04:34 pm - THE PEOPLE SPEAK: Denied entry more than misunderstanding During the homecoming game two weeks ago, my children were denied entry to the game.
I received a call from my frantic child stating he and his brother were not allowed to enter the game because their names were on a list after the big fight at Muskogee High School. I went to Indian Bowl and requested to talk to someone about “the list” and was directed to a toy cop named D. Hall. He started by saying that my kid’s names were on “this list” for fighting at school. I asked to see “this list” and my children’s names were nowhere on it. But he was determined to make my kids be on that list. About that time, the principal happened by and explained that my kids were not involved in any fight and allowed them into the game. End of story right? Wrong! Hall, with his Barney Fife-acting-self, just didn’t want to be wrong and could not leave the situation alone. Just like Barney, an over zealous cop with too much presumed power, he had to try and push his weight around. He continued to say I think they’re the kids and their names are on the list. So I asked him, who made the list why are my kids on it? His response was that it came from the coaches. What coaches? Still, no answer. My children went to the game to have good time and were harassed for no reason other than the fact that they are young black males who were being stereotyped. People talk about all the bad that kids do, but it’s cops that aid in turning good kids into bad ones. He should know it takes more than a badge and a gun to get respect, and it sure takes more than that to be a law enforcement officer. Muskogee needs law enforcement officers to protect and serve our streets, not judgmental racist cops. Lawrence E. Jones Muskogee
