THANK YOU 11.23.13

TO THE restaurants in Muskogee that offered a free meal to veterans, thank you! My spouse and I were at the Golden Corral, which was filled to capacity from 4 to 9 p.m. They were assisted with the seating from local EMS personnel who did a great job of “directing traffic.” The food was excellent.

All branches and times of service could be seen — WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. There is a bond among these men for all, in their days youth, “stepped up to the plate” when needed. I think many were mindful of the ones that could not be there for they lie in military cemeteries in America and around the world.

As a reminder, freedom is not free, a few words about the last great battle in the Pacific, Iwo Jima.  This battle was fought by three Marine divisions. There was 26,000 casualties, 6,800 killed. Prior to leaving Iwo, survivors walked up and down the rows of graves reading names on the crosses and Stars of David. These dead were later brought home some to their hometown, others to Arlington National. During this fight, there were five Congressional Medals of Honor and six Navy Crosses won. Someone chiseled an epitaph and placed it at the Iwo Cemetery, it said simply “When You Go Home, Tell Them For Us and Say, For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today.” A price has been paid. Thanks Golden Corral, you made it a great day.

WHERE WERE all of the Muskogee area history buffs at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15? Jonita Mullins, Muskogee’s wonderful historian, gave me a historic walking tour through the Capital Place and Founders’ Place districts. I was the only one that showed up, so I got my own personal tour, which was just fabulous.

I was born and raised here in the great city of Muskogee and I learned so many interesting facts about our forefathers. The architecture of those old homes were just awesome. Something you couldn’t get the feeling of by just driving by, walking by was the way to go.

Thanks for the wonderful tour. Keep up the great work.
