THE PEOPLE SPEAK — Cherokee Nation seal should be fixed

On the front page of the Tahlequah Daily Press was a picture of the new splash pad being built. My only suggestion is to ensure the Cherokee “star,” which depicts the fire of the original clans, is not upside down as it was on the front page. The “star” should have one point up, standing on two points, like a star on the American flag. To verify my suggestion please goggle: “Oklahoma Historical Society’s Chronicles of Oklahoma, Chronicles of Oklahoma, Volume 18, No. 4, December 1940. Officials Seals of the Five Civilized Tribes by Muriel H. Wright.”

Or just type in “Official Seals of the Five Civilized Tribes” in any search engine. Cherokee law prohibits changing or altering the Seal of the Cherokee Nation from its original design in 1839. The flaw in the Cherokee Seal was brought up to former Chief Chad Smith’s administration. The response was “it was the contractor’s mistake” but never rectified.

Maybe current Chief Baker will see this flaw and correct it. The flawed seal is used on everything that signifies it as the Seal of the Cherokee Nation. Makes me wonder why no one (CN council member, CN history expert) has noticed this flaw beforehand?
