THE PEOPLE SPEAK — What do working class people really stand for?

I don’t know if you have heard this, but Republicans of the House of Representatives passed a budget that would gut Medicare benefits for our seniors, hurt hard working families, and stunt the nation’s economic growth, and again lower the taxes for the extremely rich. It’s called the “Ryan Plan.”

It would raise military spending by $484 billion, while slashing food stamps by $126 billion, and take $40 billion out of the pockets of students paying for college, while ending Medicare guarantee for seniors.

In one report that I read, this is what the Ryan Plan would do for Oklahoma:

• Middle class families would pay $2,000 more in taxes.

• 55,980 seniors would pay more for medicine.

• 7,480 college students would not receive Pell Grants.

• 424 domestic violence victims would lose access to the stop violence against women program.

• 2,160 children would lose access to the head start program.

Anyone who thinks that the Republican Party hasn’t changed should read what Republican president Dwight D. Eisenhower said, and I quote: “Should any political party attempt to abolish Social Security, unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. Their numbers are negligible and they are stupid.”

Another decent Republican president of the past stated; “All contributions by corporations to any political committee or for any political purpose should be forbidden by law,” Theodore Roosevelt.

I am an Independent but, I am amazed with the change in the Republican party, that Oklahoma can remain a Republican state. It raises the question of what do the working class people of this state really stand for, and what do they want for their children?
