THE PEOPLE SPEAK – Religion’s impact on society lessens

— Most Americans do not need a poll to tell them that religion is having a lesser impact on society. Two clear examples illustrate this decline: the prevailing hostility to Judeo-Christian traditions in the military and attention to fetal pain awareness.

Led by Kansas Sen. Mitch Holmes, Kansas legislators passed a resolution affirming the military’s 200-plus years of Judeo-Christian traditions and denouncing the trend of increasing hostility from special interests toward religious expressions by service members and especially Christian chaplains. Since 2010 there are at least 20 documented incidents of intolerance to religious expressions along with stiff penalties for violators of military anti-religious mandates.

A recent Gallup poll showed 75 percent of respondents recognized religion’s benefits to society, e.g., offering purpose and meaning in life, sanctity of every human life, motivation to help the poor and vulnerable in our society. This Christian foundation is what sets America apart from all other nations.

Director of Human Dignity Center of Family Research Council, Dr. Anna Higgins, did research and wrote an op-ed saying that “we as a nation have paved the path of destruction and act with surprise and horror when incidents like Pennsylvania abortionist and murderer Kermit Gosnell and Texas abortionist-murder come to light.”

Rep. Trent Frank, Ariz., recently initiated the bill “Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act” — effectively banning abortion after 20 weeks gestation in order to protect unborn babies from the gruesome, painful late-term abortion procedures. Higgins said that every state should seriously follow suit to implement pro-life guarantees in the Declaration of Independence.
