THE PEOPLE SPEAK - Make wellness your initiative

They say, “It takes a village to raise a child.” I say, “It takes a village to raise an adult also.” I was well on my way to becoming a couch potato, content to let my doctor recommend more and more medications when my son, Andy, suggested that I attempt to reverse this downward spiral and GET MOVING!

I started with an in-home treadmill because it was something I could do year-round, didn’t require driving to a location and I could do it by myself. My sister, Becky, suggested that I add bicycling. So my son, Marc, donated his bike to the cause to get me started. The bike frame was size medium but my body frame was not, so Andy and his wife, Cassie, helped me select a bike that fit me and my style. (My husband, Ken, purchased a bike to join me, too.) Kathy Hewitt told me about Muskogee’s Centennial Trail and Doug Walton gave me a map.

Muskogee Wellness Initiative presented the challenge to “Eat Better, Move More and Be Tobacco Free” (thanks to many hours put in by Jason Shelor). So I gathered four friends to join me on a team to do just that. My sister had sent me a book that expressed those same ideals, so I gave my teammates a copy to get points for reading wellness articles. I like to have others with me on rides, so my husband, other family and friends get roped into my new “fitness lifestyle.” It is great to take others along with you on such an adventure.

The Farmer’s Market provides the community with access to fresh fruits and vegetables along with various events to encourage healthy eating. Doug Walton has been leading some group bike rides, which are gaining a great following (email:!!

Join us in this adventure of healthy life on the move, you can walk, ride, or run the trail! Let MWI (Muskogee Wellness Initiative) become MY Wellness Initiative.
