THE PEOPLE SPEAK — Congress needs more like Sen. Sanders

George Kesselring made some very valid complaints against Republican politicians in his letter to The Muskogee Phoenix, June 5, 2014, titled “GOP has left us out in the cold.”  He probably should also have included other politicians, as well, since most allow the rich to get richer while the middle class and poor get poorer.

I am a disabled Korean War combat veteran and like George, also a comrade of our foreign wars, I become very angry about some actions of our Republican representatives in Congress.  I have voted for some Republicans before, but will have to rethink this after their recent stand on veterans funding.

The recent disaster in our VA health support systems, with over 40 dead in Phoenix while waiting for health support, might have been avoided with more funds for our underfunded VA system.  Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) proposed additional funding in the senate, yet 42 of the 45 Republican senators voted against this proposal.

When the disaster occurred, many of these senators were the most vocal in calling for the director to resign and changes made in the VA health care system.

We need more congress members like Sen. Sanders, an Independent. I believe he sincerely is concerned about the needs of veterans, the middle class, the poor and children, yet there are few in congress like him.

EDWARD V. HARRIS
