THE PEOPLE SPEAK — Consider how quickly things can change

Our legislators were insensitive and cruel to keep unemployment benefits from being extended.

People are pushing for cuts in aid to the poor when reports show we already have a poverty rate above that of most European countries. The poor nutrition of many people in our country is responsible for more health problems and results in earlier deaths. These factors need to be considered by our legislators when they are cutting assistance that is already below what most other industrialized countries provide for their poor.

Those unconcerned people that are always wanting to cut aid to the poor should have walked in my shoes during the Great Depression. I was sick and starving at age 11 and only weighed 57 pounds. I was placed with relatives and with treatment and proper diet, I got well and by the time I became 12, I weighed 97 pounds.

As for those people who just don’t care what happens to other people because they feel safe and secure, they need to consider how quickly that things can change, jobs lost, death of the main provider, even an unexpected divorce, and they might need services they no longer can afford.
