THE PEOPLE SPEAK – Why keep hiring firms to do studies for city?

— I am all for city employees getting paid a fair wage for what the job calls for. I will agree on the proposed 2 percent wage increase. However, this is what concerns me. The city spent what, $45,000 to run a survey as to what other cities are paying their employees in comparable jobs. My question is, what cities? Are they comparable to the population and size of Muskogee?

I wonder why we have to keep hiring these outside firms to do studies for us. It seems that over the past several years Muskogee has hired different firms at hundreds of thousands of dollars and honestly, I see no real improvements.

This most recent survey suggested that the city of Muskogee must remain competitive in wages, but part of this survey should reveal how many of our city employees have quit and moved to other cities “just for the pay.”

You can run and pay for surveys all day long, but what is the basis for the survey and what prompted the need for this survey? It is hard for me to believe that the condition of the streets of Muskogee are a result of the pay levels for the street maintenance. Maybe we will need another survey to figure out why the streets are in a shambles.

Here is a suggestion for another survey, “Is the Mayor and City Council representing the citizens of the city of Muskogee?”
