THE PEOPLE SPEAK — Support SAFE act to end horse slaughter

— I am embarrassed to be from Oklahoma after “Horse Slaughter Skye” introduced HB 1999, the majority of our legislators sneaked it through very fast against the will of the majority of the people and the cold-hearted governor signed it into law. If it is against the law to eat horsemeat here in Oklahoma, why are we shipping it overseas for someone’s child to eat?

Horse owners need to take responsibility for their horses and have them humanely put down (that is with a needle) if they are too old and sick to live. The number of old and sick horses aren’t enough to run a slaughterhouse. This bill was all about money, and they will be breeding and shipping healthy horses into Oklahoma for slaughter.

The federal government has the SAFE Act up for a vote, which will outlaw all horse slaughter in the United States and also ban the shipping of horses out of the country for slaughter. Call your federal legislators in support of the SAFE Act. Let’s hope the federal government has more sense than the state of Oklahoma.
