THE PEOPLE SPEAK — President should pardon Jackson

— President Barack Obama should pardon former U.S. Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. of Chicago. His high crime? He pleaded guilty to using campaign contributions for personal items. Campaign gifts are a form of food stamps or welfare to help the candidate pay his or her bills and stay on the campaign trail. Let’s get real. Most members of Congress cover up the personal stuff in the millions they spend to get elected or re-elected. Jackson muffed his cover-up in spending $750,000 on his luxuries.

All politicians are prima donnas who don’t shop at dollar stores or wear Walmart’s finest. We treat them like kings and queens and expect them to look and act like royalty with lots of servants who carry their bags and kill the rats, i.e. opponents.

So what if Jackson used campaign funds to buy an expensive Rolex watch? He didn’t want to be caught dead wearing a Mickey Mouse timepiece. Who did that hurt? Nobody. Jackson and his father, the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., are loyal members of the Chicago political machine that launched the president into politics. Obama owes the Jacksons big time. So, the pardon will be paying a little interest on that debt.

Do not refuse

to do God’s will

In regard to the announcement these past few days that 53 percent of Americans now accept same-sex marriage, may I point out the scripture of Judges 21:25 in part that says, “every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” Please note, not God’s eye, but man’s.

In Jeremiah 6:16 where Jeremiah encourages the Israelites to get back to the “old paths,” where the good way is and for them to walk “therein” but “no” they said back to Jeremiah, “we will not walk therein.” In other words, refuse to do God’s will. That is what is happening in our country, we are refusing God’s “true way” of his commands and his plan for our salvation and doing it our way. In the book of Romans 8:6, it reminds us that a carnal mind brings death (eternal death) and that a spiritual mind brings life and peace (eternal). Flesh vs. spirit!
