THE PEOPLE SPEAK — Don’t raise fines to repair squad cars

— I am writing today in regard to the proposed raise in the traffic fine increase. I think that is unfair and unjustified to raise the fines for traffic tickets to pay for the maintenance on the city’s police vehicles. I believe that this will increase the amount traffic stops just to fill a quota. The police do a good job and I am not trying to take that away from them.

We already pay property taxes, taxes on sales, water, etc. These monies should be sufficient to cover the said needed repairs.

Perhaps the repairs would not be so necessary if the police cars were not used so much for personal use. I often see officers dropping their children off at school, spouses off at work. Maybe if some of the cost were offset to the officer in charge of the car, they might look after them a little better. I am just saying. There has to be a better way than taking more money from people who are already struggling to pay the fines now. Have you ever sat in the city court to see how many people who are there because they have defaulted on the payment plan they agreed to? It's such a waste of money to keep returning them to court and resetting them a new plan.

Is the city really going to be making money on this? If they do increase the fines, the proceeds should go to repairing the roads, which are riddled with potholes and cause so much more damage to cars.
