The People Speak — Immunity not in immigration bill

As the U.S. Senate discusses immigration reform this week, allow me to make the following comments: Immunity is not in the bill. A structured pathway to citizenship involving background checks, fines and a waiting period is.

There are about 11 million people here without proper documentation. A small percentage of that number is still a lot of people. That small percentage gets the news coverage about abusing our laws and systems. The much larger group that you don't hear about are people that you probably come into contact with without knowing it.

They are hardworking, family oriented individuals that want to raise their families and earn their own way. Most of them are already paying into Social Security and federal and state income tax without receiving any credit or benefits.

A largely overlooked segment of these undocumented Americans are those that were brought here as children, raised and educated here, married, and in many cases raising families. The spouses and children are U.S. citizens.

Do you really want to deport these mothers and fathers?

Please urge your senators and representatives to take a common sense approach to immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship for those that are an asset and want to be part of America, not to change it.
