THE PEOPLE SPEAK — Things to consider about Veronica case

There have been some letters written in the paper about Veronica. All have been supportive of giving her to Dusten Brown. However, there are some things these letters ignored.

The only mention of this relationship in the news was, “Dusten Brown’s ex-fiancee,” which indicates that they were not married. So what comes to mind is that this baby was the result of a non-marriage sexual relationship. It bothers me that the Cherokee Nation condones this kind of behavior, and is assisting the man who caused the pregnancy in the first place. It makes one wonder just how many other babies of his are out there.

Four months after Veronica was born, Brown signed that he would not contest the adoption, after telling the birth mother that he wanted to give up all parental rights. Evidently, he didn’t want to have to pay for child support. I have no idea why he changed his mind.

The Cherokee Nation Court has given Veronica’s custody to three of Brown’s family, to give them the power to make legal decisions for her. However, the South Carolina Supreme Court terminated those decisions and it has been ruled that Brown cannot assert his rights under the Federal Indian Welfare Act as he tried to do, because he did not have custody at the time of her birth. Also, the adoptive parents have multiple court orders in their favor, including two from Oklahoma judges.

The Oklahoma Governor has signed an extradition warrant, and a warrant for Brown’s arrest has been issued by the state of South Carolina. He is out of jail on $10,000 bond.

It seems to me that all this information is not good for this little girl, and that the adoptive parents would give her a better chance of growing up without all the bad background.
