THE PEOPLE SPEAK — Article should have included Billie Tower

The article regarding Bacone College nursing program celebrating 50 years (Friday, May 3 edition) focused more on Peggy Parsons, as a member of the first graduating class, than it did on the nursing program itself. I was appalled and disappointed that Billie Tower’s name was not mentioned once in the article, only in the box “If you go.” The nursing program would not have survived as long as it did without the blood, sweat and tears of a small in stature, but mighty in wisdom and tenacity, lady named Billie Tower.

During her time as director of the program, she not only increased and maintained enrollment by nurturing the students, but she had the vision for the program that would allow LPNs to enter a plan of study designed especially for them to take courses and prepare them to take state boards to become an RN. She also was responsible for the Radiologic Technology department becoming a reality at Bacone. Surely, to have had the nursing program named for her, Billie R. Tower should be remembered and honored in any such article as this.
