Who is responsible for city property? For your information, “YOU,” the taxpayer, are responsible to maintain city right-of-way property.
I live at 3522 Jefferson and Country Club Road. There is an area, approximately 20-feet wide, between my property line and Country Club Road. I have tried to maintain this 20-foot strip by mowing it and picking up trash, although I have wondered over the years if I had the right to mow city property?
This area is a steep hillside and difficult to mow. One day, when I was mowing this area, a lady stopped her car and said, “Mr. Webb, you are going to get killed by trying to mow this right-of-way!” Due to ruptured discs in my back, I have to wear a back brace when I mow or do any heavy work. However much I have tried to maintain these 20 feet, apparently it was not good enough for my “neighbor.” He (or she) reported to City Hall that their view was obstructed by tree limbs on city property and I was cited by the city to clean it up in 10 days or I could receive “stiff penalties.” I contacted the city to protest and they said, “Sorry, but you, Mr. Webb, are responsible to maintain this city property.” It cost me $200 for a trim job and I haven’t even received a “thank-you” from my “good neighbor.”
I attended every AIM meeting last fall and volunteered to serve on the “More Beautiful Muskogee” committee. I hereby withdraw from said committee because my neighbors and the city do not appreciate any efforts on my part to make Muskogee a better place to live.
