THE PEOPLE SPEAK — Think about what’s happening, America

— The United States Supreme Court handed down two seminal rulings on gay equality. Both revolved around gay couples forming families.

Anti-gay Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia joined the majority in finding the proponents of California’s anti-gay marriage referendum lacked standing. His vote allowed same-sex marriages to return to California. Then part of the so-call Defense of Marriage Act was found unconstitutional.

Today, Americans who marry a person of the same-sex from another country are allowed to sponsor that person for a permanent residence. Same-sex spouses of military personnel are entitled to the same benefits as their heterosexual counterparts.

Congressman John Boehner disbanded his “Bipartisan Legal Advisory” group that fought bravely to preserve the federal Defense of Marriage Act. Wonder if he plans on repaying the $3 million he wasted defending this unconstitutional law.

Miley Cyrus recently told Americans to stop using the word “gay” as an insult. You hear that America, Miley said stop it.

The University of Hawaii football team has again embraced the emblematic name “Rainbow Warriors.” The team dropped the “rainbow” from their name and for years were known as the “Warriors” out of respect for the delicate sensibilities of some of its coaches and players.

In Russia, glasnost is kaPut-in. President Vladmir “Macho” Putin, who divorced his wife and married the Russian Orthodox Church, signed a number of anti-gay laws making it illegal to talk gay, walk gay, or tell gay kids they are OK. Russian orphans can’t even be adopted into countries that allow gay marriages. Russians can still be gay if they stay home and hide.

The backlash has begun. There are calls to boycott the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. Gay bars everywhere are dumping Russian vodka. International men’s synchronized swimming teams are threatening to paint their toenails rainbow colors.
