Published January 30, 2009 06:33 pm - P.M. UPDATE: Red Cross ramps up feeding operations American Red Cross mobile feeding units were in Cherokee and Adair counties Friday going door-to-door to feed those with power outages.
Hope Margarit, Red Cross spokeswoman, said they also would be going door-to-door in West Siloam Springs in Delaware County. Eight emergency response vehicles were in the field covering 90 percent of Adair County and 50 percent of Cherokee County, Margarit said. “We will be feeding at about 2,000 more than (the 800) we had been feeding,” she said. The Southern Baptist Disaster Relief kitchen has moved to the Baptist Church Camp in Cookson. The Red Cross expects to spend $250,000 if the power outages last a couple of more days, she said. The expense will be greater if it goes beyond that. The community, individuals and businesses, are being asked to help fund that expense, she said. Red Cross shelters open Friday: • Cookson: TACO (Tenkiller Area Community Organization) Building, 31521 S. 540 Road. • Tahlequah: First United Methodist Church, 300 W. Delaware. • Stilwell: First Baptist Church, 801 W. Hickory. • Westville: Assembly of God Church, U.S. 62 East. Persons in Cherokee County who to be transported to a Red Cross shelter should contact local police, emergency management or sheriff’s office. The number set up for rural rides to shelters is 456-3304.
