Muriel Saunders had surgery to correct cataracts. A recent report finds that women who eat foods containing more lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamin E have a lower risk of developing cataracts.

Study: Diet may play role in cataracts

Eating dark leafy or yellow vegetables could lower risk

By Keith Purtell
Phoenix Staff Writer

“This study is very commendable,” he said. “If a person has a family history of cataracts, it might be worthwhile to follow these recommendations.”

Soper said his reservations about the research were partly based on the fact that the subjects were health professionals without health problems.

“Many diseases promote cataracts,” he said. “If someone is taking high doses of cortisone, for example if they have COPD, they may have steroid-induced cataracts.”

Soper added that researching diet and how if affects health is always a challenge.

“The problem with nutritional studies is that they have to be extremely large,” he said. “And how can you really control what people are eating?”

Fortunately, strides have been made in treating people who do develop cataracts that are serious enough to impair their vision. Soper described the current technology as “amazing.”

“We can do surgery without sutures, and the rehabilitation period is very short,” he said.
