Shelter takes shape, needs more funding

By Cathy Spaulding
Phoenix Staff Writer

A retired teacher’s organization decorated the room with the double bed and throw pillows.

“This should be good for a senior resident,” Birks said.

The Fort Gibson High School Teens for Christ painted Bible verses on the pink walls of its adopted room.

Bradley Funeral Home furnished a room where people can watch TV or play games. Some rooms come with their private bathrooms, also adopted and refurbished, Birks said. Two dormitory-style rooms with several bunk beds also were adopted, he said.

Several organizations still need to finish their rooms. The Salvation Army also is renovating its kitchen area he said. Birks said the rooms are to be ready in time for the shelter to have an open house June 2.

Birks said he hopes the open house will get people interested in supporting the shelter on a continuing basis.

He said he now is working to secure grants or other types of funding from foundations or other agencies. He said he also is seeking help from businesses to help fund major heating and air conditioning repairs.

Birks said people could be able to stay at the shelter for as long as two years, until they are able to secure a job and another home.
