In the 1939 movie “Wizard of Oz,” Jerry Maren of the Lollipop Guild presented Judy Garland with an enormous lollipop, welcoming her to Munchkin Land.
Muskogee movie producer ShIronButterfly Ray said she hopes to present Maren with a lollipop and more when he comes to Muskogee as part of the annual Bare Bones Film Festival, which runs from Thursday through April 26. Maren, one of the few surviving Munchkins from the movie, will receive the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award on April 24 and sign copies of his biography, “Short and Sweet,” on April 25.
Maren’s visit is one of several big events to highlight the festival, said Ray, the festival’s director.
She said more than 175 films, from short subjects to full-length features, will be shown over 11 days.
“Since we’re in our 10th year, we decided to charge only $10 per day, and people can see all they movies they want and they can switch venues,” she said. Movies will be shown at the Roxy Theater, the Roxy’s balcony and in two rooms at the Muskogee Civic Center. On Saturday night, after Azalea Festival events, films will be shown at the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.
“The biggest category this year is horror,” Ray said. “We have seven entries, and we feel all will be worthy of an award.”
She cited the movie, “It’s My Party and I’ll Die if I Want To,” by Oklahoma City filmmaker Tony Wash as an example.
“And we have some awesome documentaries and a special category for seniors,” she said.
A new event this year will be the Parade of Stars-Cars-Guitars at 5 p.m. April 25.
“This will be a tribute to the many stars who came from the Muskogee area,” she said. “And we seem to have more classic car clubs than any place.”
Muskogee Mayor John Tyler Hammons will be grand marshal. The parade also will feature look-alikes of country singers Tim McGraw and Carrie Underwood.
Ray said she is trying to find a lollipop big enough to present to Maren when he comes to Muskogee. She also might want to give him a cheeseburger. She said Maren played the Cheeseburglar in some McDonald’s commercials, played an ape in “Battle for the Planet of the Apes,” and performed in TV shows including “Seinfeld,” “Bewitched,” “House” and “The Odd Couple.”
