Area students to be honored for excellence

Students from Muskogee High School, Warner, Checotah, Roland and Muldrow will be honored among 100 top Oklahoma seniors at the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence Academic Awards Banquet.

Area award recipients are Reagan M. Haas of MHS; Justin Cockrell and Robert Anthony Hayes of Warner; Garrett Rosser of Checotah; Haley Cosner of Roland and Danni Powell and Rebecca Bedford of Muldrow.

The banquet will be 6:30 p.m. May 19 at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City.

• Haas has been named a Muskogee Phoenix Academic All-Star and received U.S. Achievement Academy honors. Named Muskogee High School's Most Academic for 2007, she is active in Student Council, Teens for Christ, Science Club and the Alpha Adelphi Service Society. She has been co-captain of the varsity tennis team and a member of the Academic Pursuit Team. She has been a math and reading tutor for three years and has volunteered for Character Camp, Kids' Space and Special Olympics. Haas plans to major in English at Oklahoma State University.

• Cockrell is a National Merit finalist and Presidential Scholar nominee. He is vice president of Warner High's National Honor Society, secretary of the senior class and a member of the science team. Cockrell's Academic Pursuit Team won this year's Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association District Championship and the Connors State Brain Bowl Championship. He plays first chair timpani in the high school band and was named to All-District Honor Band. Cockrell is also a drummer in a Christian rock band, Texhoma. He plans to study psychology at Oklahoma Christian University.

• A National Merit finalist and class valedictorian, Hayes is a member of the Oklahoma Academic Coaches Association All-State Academic Team. He is president of his senior class, captain of the Academic Pursuit Team and editor of the yearbook. In addition, he is National Honor Society secretary and Student Council reporter. Hayes is active in the Keefeton Freewill Baptist Church, where he plays guitar for the church band. An Advanced Placement Scholar, Hayes plans to major in engineering at the University of Oklahoma.

• Rosser is a valedictorian and was named to the National Society of High School Scholars. As a member of the National Honor Society, he has assisted with the local Angel Tree program and other food drives and performs with the school choir at local events. Treasurer of the Spanish club and member of his school's select choir, Rosser is also active in his church and community. The leader of Teens for Christ, Rosser has participated in mission trips and served as a leader at children's church camp. Rosser plans to attend the University of Oklahoma, majoring in criminal justice.

• Cosner is valedictorian of her senior class, an Oklahoma Academic Scholar and Oklahoma representative for the Youth Leadership Council. She is vice president of Roland's Student Council, captain of the cheerleading squad and a member of the Honor Club and yearbook staff. She has received superior district ratings as a pianist and participated in several high school plays and musicals. Cosner is also a volunteer tutor to elementary students. She plans to study pre-law at Oklahoma State University.

• Powell, a National Merit finalist and Advanced Placement Scholar, spends much of her time giving back to her school and community. As a sophomore, she founded HOPE: Helping Others Pursue Education, a church-based peer tutoring group, which she continues to lead. Her church and community activities include Pulse Ministries Core Leadership and Relay for Life. Powell serves as president of her school's National Beta Club and is an active member of TEEN Coalition, the Theta Pi Science Club and the high school competitive speech team.

• A National Merit finalist, Bedford is president of her school's Science Club, vice president of Beta Club and secretary of the Math Club. The recipient of numerous academic honors, Bedford started an American Mathematics Council competition at her school two years ago. She is active in competitive speech, Delta Beta Sigma service sorority, church ministries and the TEEN Coalition. She enjoys ballet, tap and jazz dancing. Bedford plans to attend the University of Tulsa, majoring in biochemistry.
