Taft trustee issues unresolved

Taft trustees remain at odds over two town trustees, one who has moved out of town and the other who has been out of state since October.
Trustee Lelia Davis refused to stay for a Monday meeting after Eugene Curl, who recently married and moved to Haskell, insisted he was still a trustee.
After Davis left the meeting, Curl submitted a one-sentence resignation effective June 1.
Before leaving, Davis noted attorney Allen W. Counts of Muskogee wrote the trustees that a vacancy exists when an elected official ceases to be a permanent resident of the municipality. No formal resignation is needed, he wrote.
“No action is required by the town trustees except to take steps to fill the vacancy pursuant to Oklahoma statute, 2001, Section 8-109,” he wrote.
Meanwhile, the town has amended an agenda for the trustee regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. tonight.
The agenda calls for an executive session to discuss and take action on accepting Curl’s resignation letter, extending a leave of absence for Trustee Patricia Springs and appointing a council member to be placed on the signature card at the bank.
Davis said state law does not provide for a further leave of absence for Springs, who has been in Atlanta and absent from meetings since December.
Muskogee County District Attorney Larry Moore said state law provides that when a member of the municipal governing body is absent for more than one-half of all meetings of the body, regular and special, held within any period of four consecutive months, he/she shall cease to hold office.
Also on the agenda:
• Elect mayor and vice mayor.
• Discuss and take action on employee salaries.
• Financial bills.
• Floyd Smith, $100 for removing trash on April 3.
• Employees pay day.
