Want to give the Illinois River some much-needed attention before the start of summer? Join the first Illinois River cleanup of 2008.
On May 30, volunteers can float the river for free, spend time with likeminded people and help get the river in great shape for the upcoming summer. This is the first of three cleanups this summer and participation in each one may lead to winning one of two Old Town kayaks being given away in September's cleanup. These cleanups are not only an opportunity to enjoy a day on the Illinois River, they are also a great way to help the local environment. Last year's cleanups collected more than 2,100 pounds of trash from the Illinois River.
The cleanups are annual events coordinated by the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission. Organizations, businesses and individuals are invited to participate. The deadline for pre-registration is May 28. To pre-register: (918) 456-3251, or osrc2@fullnet.net.
